Motion Picture Cultural Village

Reminds me of where I am every time I walk out of the door.

Having dinner with some friends at a Japanese restaurant in Taipei. There was a mister Donut across the street that I had to take a photograph of.

Rainstorms here can get really heavy sometimes...

Taipei subway. You're supposed to wait behind the white line on the platform. Yes, I'm hanging over the rails for more than half a meter in order to take this photo.
Someone of the local staff tried to fine me, but I can't speak Chinese, and he couldn't speak English, so he gave up. '(^_^)'

We visited Chiang Kai-Shek Shilin Residence, but didn't make a lot of pictures.

And Yixuan was sooo tired at the end of the day.

Daoist Ritual on Fuxing road

I'm not sure what this ritual is about, but it has all the aspects of a funeral. I cannot be sure about it though. I recorded a lot of this, but I'm not sure where I can upload movies.
The last two photo's are a sad picture of Banqiao and my friend, Kerry-Ann, who studied at my university in the Netherlands last year.

National Palace Museum and Keelung Night Market

Saturday we went to the National Palace Museum, which contains a lot of treasures from China brought to Taiwan somewhere in the 1950's. On our way to Keelung we came upon a local temple which is transformed into a cinema on Saturday night. Especially in older times, when Taiwan was relatively poor, people gathered in the temple to watch films together. The other photo's are Keelung night market, which is very famous and a lot of fun to explore, however it's completely flooded with people on weekends.

Jiufen

Jiufen is stunningly beautiful. While strolling the routes on the mountains we found the Shinto temple (stone pillars/lanterns) build by the Japanese during the occupation. It does not quite serve any function though, since the religion has no followers here, but at least it's a minor tourist attraction.

The big industrial building is a copperworks depleted of ... copper. But it might very well be the reason the river is orange. It's been used as a backdrop for music video's due to the industrialist fantasy atmosphere is radiates.

Another photo features lots of tombs on a hill which is dedicated to them.
I have no idea what the food exactly was. I recognised the squid though.

By the time we wanted to go back home we discovered there were no busses back to the city anymore, so we had take another city bus to Keelung, where we got on the train to Taipei.

Anyone unable to read Chinese should note my name is not on the painted love declaration.

Danshui

Danshui is really cool. It's a small city north of Taipei which is victim of an enormous stream of visitors from the capital in the weekends. The main street follows the coastline and is filled to the brim with many warm and joyful restaurants and pubs. The place emanates a cheerful ambiance and has many interesting places to visit. I didn't manage to do all of them, but here are a few.

Hong Mao Cheng is a small fortress built in the 17th century. The building there is built by the Dutch and replaced the previous Portugese fortress, which was first demolished because the new imperialists wanted a different (better?) structure. I found a humorous cannon manual of which I had to take a photo.

Among other pictures; a street cat, a domestic cat, a local temple, a christian church (Yesu ai ni! ... Jesus loves you), two universities, old men sitting at the beach, too many pictures of the beach, a flock of overly enthousiastic christian youth performing and a way too expensive restaurant where I just *had* to have dinner.

Chang Kai-shek Memorial Hall

I wanted to go to Danshui but ended up at Chang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. After visiting the hall I continued my journey to Danshui. It was a short, but imposing and interesting visit. The square before the hall is often used for relatively small-scale festivities or concerts.

Temple Mania

I never admit to myself that religion is one of the most interesting objects of study, although subconsciously it's always on my mind. Whenever I try to make my way through this vast and bustling city, I stumble upon a temple, shrine or even someone's home, where I take notes of the god's story. Most gods I've visited in south Taipei are local Taoist gods or the Earth god. This way I've been to approximately ten temples without going there on purpose. There might very well me as much gods in Taiwan as there are people. No building or place goes without religion.

Some photo's; the woman with the red shirt is a temple servant, the local population take turns tending to the temple. The other women on the next photo is a housewife from the neighborhood bringing offerings. After withstanding my questions for some time she decided I had to pay my respects to the Earth god. I cannot remember how many times I've had to do that by now. It makes sense though, you can't go into someone's house and ignore him.

River next to my apartment

The photo's at the bottom are all taken from the bridge next to my apartment or from my flat's rooftop. Being able to see mountains straight from out of the city is really something new for me, but it's really cool. They photo's are already outdated, since the heavy rainfall has caused the river to reach much higher. There are many fish in the river, but it looks like nobody wants to eat them. Catching them would be extremely easy, since they're only swimming upstream very slowly in huge numbers. I haven't looked at the text (classical Chinese) next to the river properly, but it roughly reads something like "The river is the mother of the earth, let us take good care of her." (Don't nag me with this, Milan, I'm too lazy to look up the characters)

Further ahead you will see some stray dogs, of which Taipei has plenty. With this great heat, they're often sleeping outside shops with air conditioning. They don't really bother anyone, though sometimes they will follow you for a while if you have anything to eat on you. Usually they give up after a while though. One foreign immigrant does more than most of us; instead of just feeling sorry for them, he has set up a help center for the stray dogs of Taipei.

The last photo's are from Taida University. This is just the main entrance, I didn't have any business inside. I bought the tourist guide, "Lonely Planet", at the bookstore opposite of the university campus entrance.

The very last photo is a Taiwanese man who runs a small Korean restaurant in my neighborhood. He's responsible for the fantastic meals I had there last week. I actually forgot to pay last time and walked all the way back to give them their money. It took some persuading before they found out they really forgot to charge me. Anyway, my kharma is good now. The kimchi in this house is very good. Speaking of which, there are plenty of Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese and Thai restaurants around if you want to taste something really different (although it's still Asian cuisine). In a country where kimchi is sold for 1-2 euro's per kilo, I'm certainly rude enough to put my own supply on the table in a restaurant or eat it for breakfast.

Sorry for not posting anything new for a while. I've been checking out Taipei's night markets lately and spent a night in the KTV (karaoke bar). Right now it's raining very hard outside, to the point that it's really very noisy inside because of the pouring rain. It's Thursday afternoon, and I'll go to class as soon as the rain stops. I plan to go to Jiufen with some friends next weekend, and the next free morning I will seek out Longshan temple to make some photo's.

Our teacher told us to watch the news because there might be a typhoon coming today. I checked out the news, but no matter how good your Chinese is, this is a huge challenge. They did not say anything about not going out or not going to work/school, so I guess we're fine. I checked the government's weather forecast and it shows the typhoon will hit us tomorrow morning.

A few things are beginning to show up in my apartment. For one thing, next to the mosquito's we know in the Netherlands, there are also some other mosquito's who are only one or two millimeters in size, but are even more annoying. They're impossible to find and their bites give an incredible itch.
Secondly there are cockroaches. They're really everywhere in this country. Unlike some other Asians, the Taiwanese prefer not to eat them. I have one in my room now but I'm not sure where it is.
Lastly, I have a very classic complaint. When I almost fell asleep at about 2 am, my neighbors started to have loud sex until at least 4 am, when I eventually fell asleep. The woman's high pitched, short moans where probably bothering another neighbor as well, as he started knocking on the walls at around 3 am. It was silent for ten minutes, and then they went at it again.

I bought some earplugs.

07/08 Guanghua Shangchang

I decided to upload my new posts in English in order to make it accessible for English-speaking friends. The Dutch people reading my blog usually possess enough knowledge of English to read this, so there should be no problems.

Tuesday morning I went to the office of Chen & Wu to use their computers and make my homework. I wanted to buy a laptop and the employees advised me to visit Taipei 101 and visit the computer conference there. When I got there in the evening, all the shops were already closed and I coulnd't quite find the conference, so the Starbucks waiter adviced me to go to Guanghua Shangchang, which is a famous place for buying the cheapest computers. In Guanghua there are hundreds of computer stores, all of them trying to undercut each other's prices. In every shop you can negotiate about everything inside the computer and the extra's they can give you. I forgot to make pictures, but it's certainly an interesting sight. I bought my laptop at EZ shop, by a salesman named Chen (it's a common last name). The computer is a new model IBM Lenovo, Pentium dual core (2 x 1.83 Ghz), has 2 GB RAM and two hard disks (50 Gb and 90Gb), respectively for programs and data, for about 400 euro's.

07/06 Tempels en potjes

's Ochtends ben ik samen met de familie van Chen naar een Daoistische tempel geweest in Banciao. Deze tempel is schijnbaar bekend om het uitgebreide beeldhouwwerk dat allerlei verhalen uit de Chinese cultuur verteld. Er waren drie wierrookbranders, eentje voor de tempel, eentje middenin en eentje in een kamertje achterin. In dat achterkamertje stonden honderden beeldjes in rijen naast elkaar opgesteld. In twee zijkamers, links en rechts van de binnenplaats, stonden ook honderden kleine godheden opgesteld.

Ik heb zelf ook wierrookstokjes aangestoken en bij elke brander gebeden. Er liggen kussentjes voor de beelden waar mensen op knielen, of de enkele fanatiekeling die een kow-tow doet. De beelden en figuren op de daken zijn versiert met potscherven, aangezien deze tempel gebouwd is in een tijd waarin Taiwan erg arm was. De draken en fenixen zijn heel zorgvuldig met met potscherven ingezet. In eerste instantie valt dat helemaal niet op en ziet het er gewoon uit als prachtig vakmanschap. Ik heb een toekomstvoorspelling gekregen op een klein briefje. Ik kan niet alles lezen, maar er staat in ieder geval dat de tijd goed is om te studeren en te trouwen, er voorspoed zal komen en geluk. Je krijgt wel elke keer een andere voorspelling, maar hoe je hem moet lezen is voor mij nog een beetje raadselachtig.

's Middags zijn we naar een keramiekmuseum geweest, waar de geschiedenis van keramiek van Taiwan wordt uitgelegd. Banciao is ook bekend om haar keramiek, en in de oudste straat van Banciao heb ik wat beeldjes gekocht (om je eetstokjes op te rusten) en een theepotje.

's Avonds zijn we naar het huis van Chen gegaan, waar we de verjaardag van zijn vader hebben gevierd. Het is erg leuk om het leven van een Taiwanees gezin mee te maken zoals het elke dag gaat. Chen's vader en moeder leven bij hem in huis, samen met zijn vrouw en kinderen. Zonder aankondiging komen ook zijn zus en haar man bij ons aanschuiven voor het eten. Het altaar in hoek is in twee delen ingedeeld. Rechts is de boddhisatva Guan-yin en links zijn de voorvaderen van het gezin. Op het altaar ligt fruit, zowel gewoon op een schaal als nog steeds ingeblikt. In de kast liggen heilige geschriften, ik neem aan dat het boeddhistische sutra's zijn.

07/05 Taipei 101

Toen ik 's avonds de metro uitkwam bij Taiwan Town Hall stond Nancy op me te wachten met een scooter. Ik heb echt al in jaren niet meer op een scooter gezeten, maar in Taipei is het iets waar je echt niet aan ontkomt. Jongeren hebben vaker wel dan niet een scooter. Samen met twee andere Taiwanese vrienden zijn we naar een bioscoop geweest, naar Taipei 101 gegaan en hebben we daar gewinkelt.

07/02 Jingmei Nightmarket

Woensdagnacht heb ik de Jingmei Nightmarket een beetje verkent. Het lijkt een beetje op een kermis, aangezien er veel verschillende spelletjes zijn die de mensen op straat doen. Tussen de bergen met goedkope slippers vond ik iets wat weer aan thuis deed denken; Heineken slippers! Heineken is geloof ik het enige dat hier aanwezig is uit Nederland, hoewel de meeste Taiwanezen geen idee hebben waar het vandaan komt.

Bij het eten ontmoette ik twee Taiwanese mannen, een architect en een advocaat, die op de Nightmarket kwamen eten. We hebben gezellig samen wat gegeten en gekletst, waarna we naar hun kantoor in Jingmei zijn gegaan. Daar aangekomen heb ik het kantoor stilgelegd; al snel verzamelden alle werknemers zich om mij heen en werd er al snel niet meer gewerkt. De mannen kwamen dichtbij zitten en belaagden mij in het Chinees met vragen terwijl de vrouwen en meisjes van binnenhuis-inrichting een paar meter achter hen gezamenlijk giechelden. Ondanks dat er in Taipei wel wat buitenlanders aanwezig zijn, zijn ze blijkbaar nog steeds een intressante vertoning.

06/30 AMS BKK TPE

Dit is de eerste keer vliegen! Ontzettend leuk natuurlijk bij opstijgen en landen. Voor de rest heb ik een beetje geslapen, een aantal films (gedeeltelijk) gezien en gesproken met de Philips software-ingenieur naast me, die de reis vier keer per jaar doormaakt tot Thailand. Chen laoshi is de hele reis in de buurt geweest en het was best gezellig om haar er bij te hebben. Van Bangkok naar Taiwan zat er een Taiwanese vrouw naast me die geen Engels kon, dus daar heb ik alvast drie uurtjes kunnen warmlopen voor het Taiwanese accent in het standaard Chinees. Op Taoyuan airport heeft Chen ons op een shuttlebus gezet naar Taipei.

Helaas kwamen Mon Xia en ik te laat aan bij mijn appartement, dus de landlord was alweer weg gegaan. In de stromende regen had een taxi (ongeveer twee euro voor 10 minuutjes) ons afgezet bij het appartement. Alle taxichaffeurs zijn aardig en een aantal ervan hebben een vette glimlach die nooit verdwijnt. Ik heb een stuk of vijftien keer gebeld met de telefoon van de Toyota garage onder mijn appartement, maar hoe vaak ik hem ook probeerde te betalen, hij wilde het niet accepteren. "No money, no money" en een brede glimlach. Het was wel gelukt om met de landlord in contact te komen, maar die was aan het werk en kon 's avonds pas komen. We zijn in de tussentijd naar het appartement van Pieter & Martho gegaan en hebben 's avonds de kamers geregeld.

De hitte... is wel heel erg wennen. Maar na de eerste twee dagen is het al okay. In Nederland kan je prima stevig doorlopen. Als je dat hier doet loopt het zweet aan alle kanten naar beneden. Alles hier is ontzettend intressant vormgegeven op een soort willekeurige, vrijvormige manier. Sommige gebouwen zijn heel vies aan de buitenkant, hebben barsten aan de buitenkant, grote stalen hekken aan de buitenkant, maar aan de binnenkant is alles ontzettend strak ingericht en ziet het er weer heel erg duur uit.

Scooters zijn overal. Als het verkeer stilstaat voor een stoplicht staan er eerst 30-60 scooters en daarna komt er een stroom auto's zonder einde. De authoriteit van stoplichten is niet heilig voor automobilisten; als het voetgangersstoplicht op groen gaat, rijden auto's en scooters gewoon door, maar dan voorzichtig de voetgangers mishoudend of ze duwen er gewoon heel langzaam aan doorheen. Een stad die nooit slaapt; 's nachts is er nog steeds overal verkeer en lopen er tientallen mensen op straat.

Gelukkig stond dit er nog op zeg!! Ik heb dit rond acht uur geschreven in een internetcafe, maar na een uur ging de computer uit en had ik hem niet geupload. Gelukkig maakt Blogspot een autosave! De eigenaar van het internetcafe zegt dat hij ook wel een headset heeft en dat ik hier mijn foto's kan uploaden, dus ik zal binnekort wat foto's erop zetten. Op de universiteit kan ik ook wel internetten, maar die computerzalen gaan al dicht om vijf uur 's middags.
